Premier League: Mid-Week Preview

Will the former Dynamo man make his Bolton debut today?

U.S. midfielder Stuart Holden is not currently listed in the match-day squad ahead of Bolton’s visit to Manchester City today, but according to the game preview on Bolton’s website, he could be added, as the team is missing six first-team players.

Considering those absences, the likely presence of recent signing Patrick Vieira in Man City’s starting eleven, and the fact that City has not lost at home all season, while Bolton hasn’t won on the road in its last eight tries—well, this looks like a tall order for Wanderers.

Fulham has lost four of its last six, but should have a shot at three points when it hosts Burnley: The Cottagers have only lost at home once this season, and they’ll welcome back striker Bobby Zamora, who missed the last game with a flu bug. Burnley has just one road point all year. Fulham’s U.S. midfielder, Clint Dempsey, is still out with a knee injury.

In today’s other games, 16th-place Wigan hosts 11th-place Stoke City while Championship side last-place Portsmouth welcomes 13th-place Sunderland.

Tomorrow is the busier day for Americans as Brad Friedel and Aston Villa welcome mighty Manchester United to Villa Park (with Brad Guzan standing by); Jonathan Spector and West Ham host Birmingham City; Marcus Hahnemann and Wolverhampton welcome Spurs; Jozy Altidore and Hull City travel to Blackburn (for a winnable match that could lift them further out of danger); and Landon Donovan, Tim Howard and Everton face league leaders Chelsea at Goodison Park.

That leaves the biggest game of the week, Arsenal v Liverpool. The schedule makers really had it in for Arsenal with this Man U-Chelsea-Liverpool gauntlet they’re on. Tough times for the Gunners.
