Check out Chuck Culpepper’s New York Times article on the love Everton fans have for LD, who finished his 10-week loan deal with the Toffees on Saturday, going 23 minutes in a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City.
Everton manager David Moyes tapered Donovan’s playing time toward the end—probably to get the club used to not having him around—but there is no doubt that the American midfielder passed his latest European test with flying colors. He scored two goals and had three assists, but the numbers fall short in reflecting the spark he provided. He was voted Player of the Month for January, and Everton went 6-2-2 in Premier League play with him in the lineup, including consecutive wins over Chelsea and Manchester United.
As Donovan said, “It’s been really great, and I can’t imagine many players in the world, let alone Americans, can say they have played against and beaten Chelsea and Manchester United in the space of 10 days.”
A Facebook page entitled “Keep Landon Donovan at Everton!” has drawn more than 10,000 fans. It looks like they’ll be disappointed, since Donovan appears set to rejoin the L.A. Galaxy, but they certainly got their money’s worth in this deal, and may see Yank imports in a new light after this.
