Crew Falls at Toluca, Exits CONCACAF Champions League

The Columbus Crew ran MLS clubs’ losing streak in competitive games in Mexico to 20 last night, but at least they went down swinging in a lively second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Toluca.

After the teams traded penalties on either side of halftime, a spectacular free kick by Antonio Naelson gave Toluca a 2-1 lead. Columbus playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored his second of the night—off a rebound of a shot by Steven Lenhart, who tallied two in the first leg—to tie it for Columbus in the 70th minute. But just two minutes later, Naelson hit another terrific free kick, bending it just inside the far post to give Toluca the win as Crew keeper Will Hesmer could only watch.
