Your Eye-Catching Headline of the Week: Middling MLS Sides Play to Scoreless Draw

Toronto FC and the Chicago Fire, two Eastern Conference teams in desperate need of wins as they chase the eighth and final MLS playoff spot, battled to a 0-0 draw at Toyota Park last night.

The Fire (6-7-8) had the best chance of the night when Nery Castillo sent his fellow designated player Freddie Ljungberg on a breakaway with a through ball in the second half, but the Swede shot wide as Toronto keeper Stefan Frei came off his line to challenge.

Toronto (7-9-7) had two appeals for handballs in the box waved off by referee Ramon Hernandez.

Check out the highlights here, and note, at the 1:50 mark, Toronto coach Preki smacking the camera away as he responds to the second apparent handball in the box by Chicago:

The Fire now stands six points out the playoffs with nine games to play, while Toronto is four back with seven games left on its schedule.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, with Toronto hosting lowly DC United and Chicago traveling to Philadelphia.
