Yanks In England: Double-Barreled Trackback

While we battled a TB-like ailment that swept through the tenement-like headquarters of Backpost last week, Round 12 of the Premier League passed us by entirely. Now, Round 13 has come and gone as well.

So let’s get caught up with a quick-hit review of all the Amerks in the English top flight during the past two rounds, which included midweek action on Nov 10.

Here we go:

Clint Dempsey, Fulham

Nov 6: Started, played 90 in 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Highlight(s): Angled first-half shot forced a nice kick save from countryman Brad Friedel.

Nov 10: Started, went the distance in 1-0 loss at Chelsea.

Highlight(s): Late 25-yard blast tipped over the bar by Petr Cech. Absorbed two-footed challenge by Michael Essien that drew straight red for the Chelsea midfielder.

Nov 13: Went the full 90 in scoreless draw at Newcastle.

Highlight(s): Put three good shots on frame, all well-saved by Magpies keeper Tim Krul.

Brad Friedel, Aston Villa

Nov 6: Started went the distance in 1-1 tie at Fulham.

Highlight(s):  Four saves, three of which were excellent.

Nov 10: Started, played 90 in wild 3-2 win over Blackpool.

Highlight(s): One save; second goal not his fault as it came off a deflection.

Nov 13: Started, went the distance in 2-2 tie vs Man U.

Highlight(s):  Two saves. (Lowlight: surrendering two late goals as Villa squandered 2-0 lead.)

Brad Guzan, Aston Villa

See above: Guzan dressed but did not play in all three of Villa’s matches.

Marcus Hahnemann, Wolverhampton

Nov 6: Started, played 90 in 2-1 loss at Man U.

Highlight(s):  Three saves. Lowlight: Conceding stoppage-time winner to Park Ji-sung at the near post.

Nov 10: Started, went 90 in 2-0 loss to Arsenal.

Highlight(s): Stoned Arshavin breakaway; three saves total.

Nov. 13: Started, played 90 in 3-2 loss to Bolton.

Highlight(s): Three saves (one on fellow Yank Stuart Holden) in busy afternoon that started with a first-minute own goal.

Stuart Holden, Bolton

Nov 6: Started, went the distance in 4-2 win over Tottenham.

Highlight(s): Anchored midfield missing both Rafael van der Vaart and Aaron Lennon.

Nov 10: Started, played 90 in 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Highlight(s): Glancing header just parried out by Tim Howard.

Nov 13: Started, went 90 in 3-2 win over Wolves.

Highlight(s): Assisted on Johan Elmander’s goal in the 61st minute, then scored himself in the 66th, his first EPL goal. (Click here to see it.)

Tim Howard, Everton

Nov 6: Started, went the distance in 2-2 draw at Blackpool.

Highlight(s): Excellent late save on rocket from Charlie Adam.

Nov 10: Started, played 90 in 1-1 draw with Bolton.

Highlight(s): Two saves, including one on Holden’s header (see above).

Nov 14: Started, went 90 in 2-1 loss  to Arsenal.

Highlight(s): Three saves, stopped Nasri on a breakaway.

Eddie Johnson, Fulham

See Clint Dempsey, above, for schedule: Johnson dressed but did not play in the tie with Villa and the Chelsea loss, but did see one minute of action at the end of the draw at Newcastle.

Eric Lichaj, Aston Villa.

Nov 6: Dressed but did not play in 1-1 tie at Fulham.

Nov 10: Played one minute at the end of see-saw 3-2 win over Blackpool.

Highlight(s): Being summoned to help lock down three points late.

Nov 13: Played two minutes in 2-2 tie vs Man U.

Highlight(s): (Relatively) new coach Gerard Houllier showing enough confidence in the Yank youngster to put him out there in a tight game against mighty Man U.

Jonathan Specter, West Ham

Nov 6: Did not dress for 2-2 tie at Birmingham City.

Nov 10: Dressed but did not play in 2-2 draw with West Brom.

Nov 13: Dressed but did not play in 0-0 tie with Blackpool.

Note: Hey, at least he’s making the game-day bench again. And the Hammers are on a three-game unbeaten run [!].
