BPFL Gameweek 4

The Premier League returns to action this Saturday following last week’s international break. There are nine matches spread across the weekend and one on Monday (see listings at bottom).

There’s also plenty of transfer news to catch up on as several teams—led by the newly humbled Arsenal—made a series of moves before the Aug 31 deadline.

Without further ado, here is BPFL co-commissioner MGlo to bring you up to speed:

Man, I LOVE THIS LEAGUE!! After the disaster of two weeks ago, when the site gave us unlimited changes for Gameweek 2, causing my whole strategy to go right out the window, I overthought everything and made seven changes. But, whaddaya know, I bounced back nicely in Week 3! Three of my four defenders and my goalkeeper all posted clean sheets, and my captain, my captain notched a hat trick.

Of course Hurricane Irene prevented me from seeing any of it, but I didn’t have to witness the 44 points from Wayne Rooney to enjoy each and every one of them. (This is the first time in two seasons that I have ever hit it big with my captain.) I also posted my second win of the season with a 92-point total, bested by only three other teams, two of which hit the century mark (Escobar’s Revenge and coloradokeeper).

It was also nice to see the EPL site (finally!) set up fixtures, and a table, for us, but we are still waiting for a response from them about retroactively posting Gameweek 1 action. Hopefully we will hear something. (I am not holding my breath.)

With the international break last week, focus shifted from the pitch to all the transfers that occurred before last Wednesday’s deadline.

• Arsenal, trying to replace Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri—and attempting to recover from their 8-2 hiding at Old Trafford—were very busy on deadline day, bringing in two defenders (Per Mertesacker, Andre Santos) and two midfielders (Mikel Arteta, Yossi Benayoun). Will that quartet do the trick and move the Gunners out of the relegation zone?

• Liverpool were also heavily involved, sending David N’Gog to Bolton, Christian Poulsen to Evian, Joe Cole to Lille and Raul Meireles to Chelsea, and bringing back avid golfer Craig Bellamy (When is the Fulham game? Click here and scroll to No. 7 for background on that question.). Looks like King Kenny has sorted out the midfield for us fantasy players.

Scott Parker returned to the Premier League with Tottenham, while Crouchigol left Spurs for Stoke and little SWP (Shaun Wright-Phillips) headed to QPR.

Now it’s up to you to figure out who will have an impact, and how those moves will affect who plays. Hopefully you will get it right. I am hoping I will too. (I am not holding my breath.)

BPFL Performance Of The Week: Escobar’s Revenge takes Gameweek 3 honors, by just a few grams, with 103 points. He netted 22 points with Wayne Rooney and 23 with Ashley Young, who scored two goals and bagged three assists! Captain Clint Dempsey earned him 14 points, as did GK Tim Howard, who, in addition to his clean sheet and three-point Bonus, saved a penalty. Senor Escobar also got clean sheets from three of his four defenders, and his margin of victory was 87 points. (Sorry, Chelsea Chris.) Well Done!
