Preki, Johnston, Out at Toronto FC

Toronto FC’s 1-0 loss to last-place DC United on Saturday did more than put a dent in the Reds’ playoff chances. It also appears to have cost head coach Preki and GM Mo Johnston their jobs.

Tom Anselmi, chief operating officer of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, the club’s owner, made the announcement today, saying, “It hasn’t worked, it just hasn’t worked and so we’re moving on.”

Toronto FC failed to reach the playoffs in each of its first three seasons, and, after a recent slump, looks unlikely to make the postseason this year.

Johnston had been with the team since its inception—after a mediocre spell as coach in New York—while Preki took the coaching reins this season after a successful run as head coach of Chivas USA.

He led the Goats to the playoffs in each of his three years in Los Angeles and was named MLS coach of the year in 2007.

Assistant Nick Dasovic will take over as head coach for the rest of the season. Earl Cochrane will serve as interim GM.
